Community
radio is the new third sector of radio in Britain (after the BBC and
commercial radio) and it comes in all shapes and sizes. There are
now 191 licensed stations, 131 of which are broadcasting on the
airwaves.
In addition, there are many community radio groups and
organisations which broadcast using short term licences (RSLs) or over the
internet, or which are involved in community training or social inclusion
projects.
The key things about community radio are that it's
"90% community and 10% radio", it operates for "social
gain" and it enables a wide range of people to take part and make radio
for themselves.
Your local community radio station or
group - find community radio stations and groups in your area via
some of these organisations and websites:
-
Ofcom
- the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK
communications industries - click on the links 'List of community
licensees' or 'Community Radio Map' (pdf)
-
Community
Media Association - membership body for community media
organisations and individuals - click on the tab 'Broadcasting
Now'
-
Community
Radio Toolkit - links to the websites of community radio stations
around the country
-

UK Internet Directory - use the A-Z buttons to search the whole
Media UK Internet Directory, or click on the tag for community
radio
Once you've found a community radio station
or group which is near you, or which looks like it would be interested in
your ideas, you could call them up - find out what they're planning for
Refugee Week, or suggest an interview or topic where you have contacts or
something to contribute. And do let us know the results!
